I can switch from portrait to landscape in outlook, but
I can't do it when I want to print from a geneology
program. I don't know why. Any thoughts? Thanks.

That is really up to that application.
But you may still be able to adjust your printer
by going into the control panel under "printers and faxes"
and right-clicking your printer for 'properties'

So this depends both on your application and
your printer's capabilities

Go to Start > Settings > Printers & Faxes. When that window
opens, from the Toolbar select > File > Server Properties and
under the Forms tab, scroll down and make your adjustments
or create a new form.

Which setting under forms is equivalent to 81/2 x 11? I
tried letter transverse but that didn't work. Thanks.

Go to Start > Settings > Printers & Faxes.
Right-click on your Printer icon and select
Printing Preferences.

On the Layout tab, under Orientation, click one of the following options:
Portrait to print vertically on the page.
Landscape to print horizontally on the page.
Rotated Landscape to rotate the print 90 degrees counterclockwise on the page.
A representation of your selection will appear in the display area of the dialog box.
