I have a pivot chart in which all the bars are the same color.
I would like to change the color of the bars based on my own criteria.

Any suggestions on how to change the formats for the bars individually?

is there any way to stop the default from changing the colors back
after I've adjusted them?

You could change the defaults in the color palette, which changes the
defaults for everything.

Microsoft suggests recording a macro one time when you fix the pivot chart
formatting, so you can rerun the macro next time.

I may use the macro method but curious about changing the color pallete
method. I am adding two columns per month so I would have to re-record
the macro each time if I use the maco method.

How would I go about changing the defaults in the color palete?

Tools menu > Options > Color tab. The bottom two rows are the default chart
colors.

Note that if the pivot chart's layout reverts to a default layout, changing
the colors may not help.
