Changing of Normal.dot

Frequently, in OL2003 (using Word as email editor) when I close the
application I will get a message that the normal.dot has been modified and
would I like to save it. This happens w/o any changes in toolbars or styles
(or anything else operator initiated). I always say no, at which time I am
give the file dialog to save it under a different name; I cancel and every
thing then shuts down.

Any idea why this might be happening?

Do you have Norton AV? Uncheck the Office plug-in
Using Word as email editor for Outlook causes a number of minor problems.
Use Outlooks own editor, which is quite up to the task.

I agree my normal.dot is not 'blank'; i.e. I have custom toolbars and
macros, however I see nothing here to explain why it keeps growing simply by
opening and closing Word. Maybe I am missing something?

In the final analysis, if I can't eliminate the cause I will revert to the
default normal.dot and reconstuct my custom version but I hate doing that if
I can avoid it.

Just FYI, you can use Organizer to copy over many of the customizations from
an old Normal to a new Normal, if you have to go the rebuild route.

It sounds like you have a badly written add-in that is both changing your
Normal.dot every time you open it and making it larger. See here for info
re finding them:

If you google the ng for threads about Normal.dot always changing, you will
find some common suspects listed.

Apparently "solved" this problem by installing a backup OS partition image
and then reinstalling Office 2k3. I'm still watching it but so far it is
behaving.
