Sam

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) installed.
When I open the My Computer Icon, my primary or boot disk name reads "Local
Disk (C:)." Is it okay now to change the name of this partition without
causing any problems such as for currently installed application programs,
etc.? Thanks, Sam.

Sure you can rename any volume. You can't change the drive letter for the
system and boot volumes. To rename the volume go to Disk Management. In My
Computer light click the volume, choose properties and type in a volume
name.

Completly Ok, the applications or anything never uses that .They use the
letter [c: or d: etc]. You can change them anytime and without a reboot.
That is only for your assist. so that you can easily recognize the disk. It
is just like renaming a folder but not related to the path.

Rock and Ayush, many thanks for your replies.

Did it work? Were you able to change the name
of the volume upon which your OS resides from
"C:" to something else? Did the change survive
a restart?

The drive letter is not available when you choose rename.

Tim, I have not made the name change as yet. However, I can right click on
the primary HD and the Rename command is available on the context menu.
After I complete a full image backup, I will go ahead and make the name
change. For clarification, I am only interested in changing the HD name
only, not the "C:" drive letter. Sam.

You cannot change the drive letter of system drive and if you manage to do
so by a boot disk or else, windows will become unbootable and it will boot
only after you change it back to what it was.

The "name" ala volume name - do: Right click drive>Properties>volume name
listed near top - can be changed.

Arghhhh...yeah I started to write disk management, then did an oops and
changed to My Computer and forgot to delete the disk management reference.
Shouldn't post when you're really tired, eh? ...lol
