Yeah, I was going to say something. That idea most likely comes from the
$299 Dell specials.

If you look at pricewatch.com, you can get an AMD Sempron CPU/MB combo
starting around $100. For starting around $130 you can get a 3'ish Ghz
P4/MB or an AMD64/MB combo.

Sorry, reality check. I like Intel/Intel. How much now with reasonable
speed in these day's aspect? Don't forget to add the newer DDR2 ram 1GB
minimum, no cheap stuff, thanks. IE Asus, AOpen, Intel, Crucial for
instance is good.

Add a good graphics card from ATI agp or PCI-E 256MB or more, onboard ain't
cuttin it. Excuse that, AMD since they bought out ATI.

Total price?

(1) Since both OEM generic, upgrade, and full version of XP are sold
retail, yes. And am assuming you're an individual not entitled to anything
beyond retail aspect in that context. "new" is a perspective of time. A
version w/SP2 is highly suggested.

(2) A bootblock is a function of the XP OS installation. The OS won't
install if a specific bios and version of that bios is not running. This is
a NON-generic aspect of an OEM installation. The bios finding the mbr,
then the boot partition and handing over to operating system files is not
an issue in this context. The OS has to be installed first for this to be
the issue.

Do you lay awake at night thinking things to word and configure that may
confound an answer? Have seen the worst in prior MS OS newsgroups over the
years. Try more fathoming.

OS = XP SP2 - I am considering upgrading my computer by installing a new
motherboard. Two questions: (1) Is it necessary to also install a new
retail
copy of the OS? (2) If not, will the new motherboard BIOS recognize and
boot
from the OS on the present HDD, or will it be necessary to reinstall the
OS?

IMO nothing should be upgraded until the Core 2 Duo stuff comes out en
masse.

There was only mention of updating the MB and (assuming) CPU.

The original statement of 'I say this because now-a-days its almost as
cheap to just buy a new box.' is what was under fire.

Those really cheap boxes from Dell and the like will NOT have 1G of DDR2
RAM, and they are all built-on video.

But (2) 512 mB sticks of Crucial DDR2 will cost about $120, and a decent
video card will be < $100.
