Is there any way with XP Home to change the start mode for
a kernel driver? I have added a Microsoft Optical
Wheelmouse to a Dell Inspiron 1100 and the Wheelmouse does
not start at power up. The kernel driver mouhid.sys does
not start untill I unplug/plugin the wheelmouse. Start
mode is set a Manual and I want to change it.

I am assuming that you are seeing the "Manual" inside the Services applet. If
so, you should be able to double-click on the service in question and change the
"Startup type" from "Manual" to "Automatic" to "Disabled".

Also is the status of service in question "Started" or "Stopped"? If it is
currently "Started", then maybe it is something else causing your problem. If
the state is "Stopped", have you tried to "Start" the service while the problem
is occurring just to see if it fixes your problem so you won't have unplug the
mouse all the time?
