had windows 98se and loaded windows xp...is there a windows xp upgrade that i
should have used instead? now xp is working, but my desktop icons from my
previous windows 98se are gone...they are in the c drive, but i don't want to
have to manually place them back on the xp desktop...and all my previous
programs are no longer on the all programs list...shouldn't the icons and
programs been transferred automatically when i changed to windows xp? and
now my aol is not working...says no connection can be found, even though i
can get online via internet explorer.

You need to install drivers for your hardware that are compatible with
XP. You may need to uninstall/reinstall programs. As for the icons, the
default XP desktop is different. Go to the Display applet in Control
Panel>Desktop tab>Customize button.

If you are talking about shortcuts other than system shortcuts, make new
ones.

If you are unsure about what you've done or how to handle this, have
either a knowledgeable friend (one who is really knowledgeable not one
who just says he is) or a professional come in and help you.

It Sounds like you made a clean install of Windows XP and now have a dual
boot system. If so, you will have to install all of your programs in WinXP
but if you tell them to install in the old folders the install should go
very rapidly.
