I have XP Home on my laptop and 2000 Professional on my
desktop. Having trouble recently with the desktop and
decided to change to XP. Local store has XP Home upgrade
priced at $100, but box says it upgrades from 95, 98 or
Me, no mention of 2000. The XP Professional box includes
2000 among possible upgrades, but it is prices at $200.
Aren't these prices reversed? Since I already purchased
95, 98 and 2000 successively fro the desktop, if anything
upgrading from 2000 should be cheaper. I don't think it's
worth $200 to upgrade. Question: can the XP Home upgrade
be installed over the 2000 in my desktop?

There is a price difference because of the difference between Home and Pro,
not that one can upgrade 2000 and one can't. You cannot upgrade 2000
Professional using XP home.
The way the upgrades work is Pro to Pro, Home to pro, Server to Server.
If you want to go from 2000 to Home, you will have to do a clean install.

Home will not upgrade Win2000, as it leaves out some of the commercial
facilities - like full NT domain operation, and access control at
file/folder level, and general business oriented levels of admin. You
would have to clean install a full version Home, or get Pro upgrade (at
much the same price)

.
Porbably not, since WinXP predecessor is Win2K.
WinXPHome's predecessors are ME/98SE/98/95.
