I can not get the dim read only check mark out opf the read only box. I havae
used cmd and attrib-r and modified the registry but no help on both of my
hard drives. I can not get fies to write to the folders ie, restore quicken
files from CD or get any update because windows will not let me write to
theses folders.
I have booted from my win xp pro disk and did a repair but no help.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

"Read only" as an attribute is ignored by Windows at the folder level, it
only applies to files, and does not inhibit your ability to write to a
directory. For why, read:

Unable to remove Read-Only attribute from folder

If you cannot write to a folder, it is a permissions issue - your account
likely only has "read" permissions and you need "write" permissions, and
possibly "execute".

Do you have permission to modify attributes?

Right-click on folder, select "Properties"
Click "Security" Tab
Select user that best describes your login
Click "Advanced"
On "Permissions" Tab click user best describing you
If "Inherit from Parent" is checked, try unchecking this box.
Click "Edit" button.
Look an the permissions and verify you have permission to Write
Attributes.

The "read only" attribute checked on a folder's properties is meaningless.
Ignore it.

The question, then, is do you have permission or ownership of the folders
you're trying to write to.

Right-click on folder, select "Properties"
Click "Security" Tab
Select user that best describes your login
Click "Advanced"
"Owner" tab - are you? Can you take ownership?
