If I recall correctly, .tif/s are commonly created/saved by scanners by
default and are quite large in size.

One can convert the tif to a jpg for webpages and such, and also resize,
with hardly no noticable loss in qualtity, for the most part. Back when
hard drives were much smaller, converting your tifs to jpgs was almost
mandatory even if just for archiving locally.

Because tiffs are generally very large and the majority the world is on
dialup and many people have small limits on their email accounts.
