changing drive designation using Windows XP

Greetings:

I have an computer used by my children that has one hard drive that is
seen as the E: drive. A while back, I had a bad drive that was causing
all sorts of problems with the computer before I tracked down the
cause. Now there is no C: drive, just the E: drive and it boots fine,
but when I try and install drivers for an HP network printer, it fails
because it cannot locate the C: drive. I am using Windows XP.

How do I change the reference from E: to C:?

The only way would be to format the drive, and reinstall Windows and
all of your applications. You'd do better to ask HP how to perform a
custom installation of their software; there's absolutely no sound
technical reason that the latter assigned to the boot drive (the drive
on which Windows is installed) should matter to the print drivers.

You must have had the older hd connected or some other device during the
xp installation to the new hd,this can cause the letter C: going somewhere
else,or already somewhere (old hd)..Thier is no way to change E: to C: as it
should be by default,with any utility or software...Youre best bet,unplug all
add-on hardware (printers,other hds,etc) & reinstall xp,install by booting
to xp
cd,select install xp,new copy,delete all partitions,create one,then xp
formats &
installs.This will get you C: on the new HD....

A little trick I found awhile back: fdisk the drive with a Win98 boot
disk. It will clear the stored drive letters then XP will start and
assign the first drive as C. Has worked for me several times when
backing up and replacing hard drives.
