Changing colour of a word in Word 2003

This must be a simple property change, but I can't find it. In Word 97 and
2000, I usually select a text colour, then click inside a word to change the
whole word to the new colour (or first click inside, then select colour). If
I only want to change some of its characters, I highlight them first. In a
copy of Word 2003 at work, nothing happens unless I select characters, which
is a lot of work when you're scanning a text and picking out words in red,
say. Just clicking in a word has no effect. How do change this property?
 
If this problem is in Word, I'd suggest you post it to a Word newsgroup
(maybe one related to formatting text). This newsgroup is for a different
application - Access. Access is a database product that is part of MS
Office Professional.
