changed program icons

Very strange problem, just cropped up yesterday.

Icons in quicklaunch tool bar changed, seemingly in a random way. None of
the icons in the quicklaunch bar matched the icon. I tried right clicking
the icon and changing it, and the correct icon was shown in the choices for
changing, but the change would not take effect.

Icons in start-programs menu for these programs showed the same (wrong)
icons.

In the start-programs menu, if I create a new shortcut for the program, the
shortcut would show the same incorrect icon. HOWEVER!!! when I would move
that shortcut to the desktop, it would be the CORRECT ICON!! I therefore
have a complete set of correct icons on my desktop.

When I would then try to move that icon to the quicklaunch toolbar, it would
revert back to the INCORRECT ICON!!

I have run current anti-virus software (Norton) as well as current anti
spyware (both Ad Aware AND Spybot). No change.

As a related problem, when I deleted all of these incorrect icons from the
quicklaunch toolbar, I also deleted the "show desktop" icon and don't know
how to restore it.

Thank you very much for the tips. They seem to address my issue. However,
I followed #4051 it did not solve the problem:

The icons in the start-programs menu are still not appropriate for the
program;

The shortcuts make from them and put on the desk top are appropriate;

The shortcuts I put on the quicklaunch bar (either directly placing them
there, or pasting them into the directory pointed out on tip #2877) are not
appropriate and are the same as the icons in the start-programs menu.

After following tip 4051, I tried "change icon" for the programs (both in
start-programs and quicklaunch) and they did not change.

Again, thanks for your help. I would have thought this would solve my
problem, but I'm wondering if you or anyone has other ideas? Very strange.
