Change the Sleep Icon on the Start Menu

I had a bit of confusion the first few times I tried to shut the computer
down because what looked like the "Shut Down" button was actually the "Sleep
button." I'm used to the line crossing over the circle indicating "Power" or
"Shutdown", not "Sleep". So, after four times pulling the plug on my computer
(because it would turn off the monitor, spin down the hard drive, but never
shut down) and then getting the subsequent improper shutdown, I actually read
the tool tip to see what was going on. It was only then that I went to that
little arrow button on the side to find the full list of shut down options.

I could not find a way to customize the function of this button. I never use
the sleep function on my computers, and would much prefer the quick button on
the Start Menu to be Shut Down. As the icon used has always, in my
experience, meant "Shut Down" when on a computer screen, I did not even
bother to read for a tool tip. After all, the Shut Down button on the XP
startup menu gave me an option how I wanted to shut down, so why would I
expect anything different from a similar-looking button on Windows Vista?
Very confusing.

By the way, if anyone has a way to change the function of this button that I
haven't seen yet, let me know. As I said, I don't use Sleep Mode, so I'd much
rather the button be assigned to true system shutdown if at all possible.

Thanks

I was a little confused at first as well, because you are right, Microsoft
decided to use the universal symbol for a power switch on the sleep
button..I'm really baffled as to how they dropped the ball on that one, but
I have submitted feedback, please do the same. The more feedback they get,
the more likely they are to change it. besides that, it's really annoying to
click the little arrow button which you use for all the other power
options..when you have this nice big useless sleep button just sitting there
:)

I think the simbol they used is right. It's not a power simbol with the line
inside the circle but a STANDBY simbol with the line over the circle.

I agree that that this should not be the default option for the main power
button on the start menu. The best solution will be to have an option for
selecting the button behaviour from the options available on the small arrow
menu or that the button remembers the last option used and changes according
to it.

Best regards,
Angel.

I completely agree Angel. When i want to restart or turn off my pc I have to
click that little side button on the start menu. I'd rather it be a big fat
button. Something easier to target quickly.

You can change what that button does
Control Panel > System & Maintenance > Power Options. Look on the left pane.

Darn. That's for the PC Power button.

Youi're on the right track. It's under the advanced power options (it's a
small link, easy to miss).

It's not on the left bar, though. You need to click to customize one of the
power plans. The link is there, just above the save button.

I have that same exact symbol on my stereo, dvd player, and computer power
switches. My pc at work also uses the same symbol on the power button.
