what was the way to change the search with the dog into the one that looks
like win2000?

I think it was a reg file or a VBS script that did the trick,
and what is the way to restore it back to the dog afterwards?

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Explorer page, check 'Use Classic Search in Windows Explorer'

Note that while this changes the interface it does not change the
underlying engine, with its search in zip files and its inability to
search for contained text in more than a few file types
