Change the position of tick mark labels

I would like to move the position of tick mark labels in
excel chart (scatter/line plot) closer to the the X and Y
axis, than the default distances. Please help.

Anand -

You can adjust the distance of the category axis labels. Double click
the axis, click on the Alignment tab, and adjust the Offset from its
default 100 value.

This capability appeared in Excel 2000. I don't know if you'll be
satisfied with the small changes it allows. If you want more control,
you can add a dummy series as a custom axis, and adjust the labels to
your heart's content:
