I'd second that - RTF is reasonably universal.
Of course, if they don't need to edit it, there's always CutePDF, which will
let you "print" the file in a very common Adobe PDF format. Free, by the
way.

Either get hold of a copy of Office on some machine available to you and
run its setup to include the Converter/Filters for Text - Works 2000 and
Works 4.0 (Frankly they should have this but you can't very well say
so), then read it in and save in Word format;
or else save it from Works in RTF (Rich Text Format) which they *should*
be able to read.
