Change Registration Name

S

Sab

I am recently married and want to change the name on the
system registration. It sends all of my documents under
my maiden name. How do I change the registration name on
Windows XP.

OK... sorry I couldn't resist...

The real answer I believe is... In the Windows registry...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Registered Owner:

Maybe start by changing it to the hyphenated version... just till you figure
out if this is going to work out... i.e. Smith-Jones...:) Funny how that
works... Why do they MINUS out the man's name?

Re-reading your question... I think you want to change your user account
name... This is differnet then registration name... "My Documents" is under
your user account name in your local profile... You would have to add a user
account with your new name and then log in as that new user... If that is
what you really want then let the group know... Plenty of un-married geeks
out here looking to impress a young lady in need!!!

Look up "Regedit.exe" on the Microsoft Web Site... I would tell you how to
do it, however if you do not know what you are doing this can be a very
dangerous thing to be messing with... You could very well add or remove
something that could render your system inaccessable... I recommend you read
up on it first, or ask a professional to do it for you!!

actually, i have windows xp home.

i checked the regedit.

i do not have a "registered owner"
file under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

that is, a file called "Registered Owner":

probably best to leave well enough alone.

however,
i do know how to add remove users, though, thank you for that.

am curious about my computer in many ways.

was interested in making sure registered owner is correct.

where can i determine if my name is correct when assessing
"registered owner"?

thanks again,
rjl

Greetings --

To fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP, you can use
Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.

The C:\Documents and Settings\Username folders _cannot_ be
renamed, even if the associated user account has been. So, your best
course of action would be to log on using the built-in Administrator
account, create a new user account, with the username desired. You
can then delete the old user account(s).
