I have a PC that I am repairing for some but I did not expect to need to do
a full reinstall of XP. I know they have a copy because I gave it to them,
but I don't have their CD.

I can use my CD to do the update but I don't want to register it with my
product ID. How can I change the PID after I do the reinstall and before I
register?

Use your cd, but use there product key. Call them and get their product key.
This will generate the product id for there machine and key combo. Don't use
your product key or it will "de-activate" your computer.

Before starting, get the free Aida 32, enterprise edition from
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32
which is an excellent general System Info tool, and its Software -
Licenses page will tell you the one used for Windows and ones for
several other items. Then use that key in conjunction with *your* CD.
Provided the CD is the same variant of XP then you can do it this way -
if it isn't then you would not be able to use their key in a later
change
