Change Network

I have a PC and a Notebook networked together via a crossover cable. The
PC is Host the notebook Guest. The Host PC has a USB Modem which is
shared by the Guest.

If I want to change my hardware to a "Gateway Modem", what do I have to
do regards my current network set up.

Do I have to create a new network, or will the current network still work?

Assuming that a "Gateway Modem" is a router: Connect each machine to the
router with a straight through ethernet cable; do not use a crossover cable;
and disable Internet Connection Sharing on the host computer.

Many thanks .. I realise now should have mentioned that the Guest shares
printers on the Host. Would this still be the case with set up you
describe?

When you switch to the new router your machines will likely get new IP
addresses. So, it is always possible that individual firewalls or other
software which relies on the old addresses might need to be reconfigured.
However, changing the connections as described should have no direct or
obvious effect on file and printer sharing.

Thanks.
I have posted this question on a couple of other forums and got useless
non descript answers.
Your response is right on the button, and most helpfull.
Appreciate your help

New to group so please exuse if I'm in the wrong place. I found this post
and is close to my problem. Just got a new XP media center computer. Have
been trying to network to my existing network of a desktop (Host) and laptop
(guest). Both are running 2000 Pro. When I try to configure the network via
the XP machine it recognizes the laptop but not the old desptop machine (host
of the old network). Is that because the XP machine is also the "Host"? If
so how do I reconfigure my old machine(2000pro) to be a guest on the network?
Hopefully I made sense of what my problem is.
Thanks in advance
Elliot
