Change Explorer Boot Shell

I want to be able to boot to a single application as my system will be
dedicated to a single function.

I have heard that you can replace the default explorer shell and use my
application. Obviously if I do this I will not ahve any desktop
functionality. I am not sure if that is a problem - I do not want users
to browse the hard disk or view the files syste or use the taskbar.

Am I missing anything major from what an explorer shell
provides.Perhaps I would need a task manager to debug determine the
system operation. Any thoughts?

Can anyone give details of how I would replace the Explorer shell with
my application.

Or perhaps provide another method of modifying explorer so that I only
provide limited functionality.

TIA

XP pro? then - Start | Run <type in> gpedit.msc <enter>
and edit the policies of the group; disabling Explorer is just one of
many restrictions you can place.

XP home, you can't edit the policies.

Under the following registry key, change the data for the "Shell" value (or create "Shell" if
necessary) to the path for the program you want.

"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon"

It will work just like Windows 3.1. Minimised apps will minimise to the desktop. The only difference for the app is exiting from the app also logs one out.

But you need to do more to lock down. Task Manager can start programs. File Open/Save As dialogs can start programs and copy/edit files.
