Change data type in a linked table

I've got my dbase secured and I've got admin rights. I'm
trying to change the data type of a field in a linked
table from text to memo or just increase to text field
size. Access won't let me change the data type on a
linked table. Apparently, I'm doing something wrong. Any
suggestions?

This isn't a security issue. You have to make those kind of changes to
tables/fields from the backend itself, not the frontend, regardless of any
security setup. Then open the frontend and "relink" to make sure you see
your changes reflected (this isn't always necessary, but is a pretty good
habit in either case).

Another question, do I need to open the backend directly
from the folder where it's located out on the network. I
can open it up this way but when I click design view for
the specific table, it says I don't have the proper
permissions but I can open it up in read only. I don't
know how access knows I don't have the proper rights
(which I do) because all I have to do is click and open
the backend file. Do you think this is a security
configuration problem on my part?
