18 months ago I moved to America and brought a computer out there, I
installed my microsoft xp software (brought previously in the UK) and at
somepoint I must have depicted my 'location' as the US. As a consequence
whenever I open a new word document the page settings (i.e. paper size) &
spell check is in 'American'...I have now relocated back to the UK and cannot
find a way to change this so that the paper size is automatically A4 & spell
check in UK English, instead everytime I type a new document (several times a
day) I have to manually change both these settings.

So I guess my question is, can I change anything to re-set it so its in a UK
format or will I have to un-install & re-install the softwear, & will this
make any difference?

Hi

Go to Control Panel>Regional and Language Options. Make sure that all menus
and submenus are set to the same option - English (United Kingdom)

First off I want to say thank you for replying, this helped solve the
language settings.

However, it has not adjusted the page setup print paper size (!), I still
have to manually change this - I have gone via the 'printers/faxes' icon in
the control panel and changed all opions to A4, but this did nothing...if you
have any other suggestions I would appreciate the help, if not thanks again
for your time.

Hi

Have you tried File>Page Setup>Paper - then set the drop down menu to A4
210x297 mm?

Try this...

Open MS Word | Tools | Options | Print tab |
Check: Allow A4/letter paper resizing | OK

[[For some countries, the standard paper size is Letter; for others, the
standard size is A4. Select this check box if you want Word to automatically
adjust documents formatted for another country's standard paper size (for
example, A4) so they print correctly on your country's standard paper size
(for example, Letter). This option affects the print-out only, not the
formatting in your document.]]

When you change the settings in regional options that will change the
default settings for page size in all new profiles. This is why if you set
regional options to UK during Windows setup, you will get all the right
default settings. However, your profile
will retain the settings for default Page size apparently regardless of
whether you tick the "Apply all settings to the current user account and to
the default user profile" setting (mine did).

So you can:

1. move into a new profile, pull over your documents, email settings, etc...

2. Manually change the default settings in each of your applications.
a. In Word go to Page Setup > Paper > set to A4 > click default button
b. Excel seems to read it from the printer default page size settings

3. (god forbid) rebuild the system and pick the UK English setting during
install.

Seems to me in older versions of Office I'd just modify the default
templates, but that doesn't seem to be an option in Office 2003, and I've
been unable to find support documents that adequately explain this. Then
again, I'm an Office (power?) user, not an expert. Perhaps you'd have
better luck in an Office forum...
