Have just recently installed WinXP Home and would like to
change the text colour of the Icons on the Desktop. At
present it's white but is sometimes difficult to see depending
on the wallpaper.
How do I do this......I have tried, Lord, have I tried and tried.

This is one of those inexplicable options that was left out of XP by MS.
No one knows why you can't change the icon text color, but you can't,
at least not natively. I don't know if third-party theme/skinning apps
will let you or not.

Unless there's a third-party program that can do this, you don't
have control over it. In general, Windows makes the text white if
you have a dark background, and black if the background is light.

Hi Bill,

By default in XP, it can't be manually changed. The text changes on its own
from dark to light depending on the color of the background. It is based on
the Desktop color not the Wallpaper. The combo is whether or not you are
using a Wallpaper and what the Desktop color is.

However...if you have Use drop shadows checked for the icon labels,
the text will always be white no matter what color the background is.

Many thanks, Malke, and to Ken and Kelly for your replies. If there
is a crumb of comfort in this it seems that it is not me who is the
dummy but who ever wrote XP. As Henry Ford said about the
Model T, "You can have any colour you like provided it's black,"
so MS says, "You can have any colour you like provided it's white."
Thanks again, guys.

Don't know how handy you are with a graphics program but I've darkened the
edges of some favorite wallpapers to make the white text more visible.

Thanks for the suggestion, Sharon,
But alas and alack
I'm as handy with a graphics program
As a cow with a cricket bat!
