just show me the money!

I recently bought a socket 370 cpu adapter (not powerleap) for my HP
7915 (UK) to go from 1.0ghz (Coppermine-T) to 1.4ghz (Tualatin) @100mhz
FSB.The Bios reports "Pentium Celeron III 1400hz @100hz".The pc boots
to the loading xp screen in normal mode but doesnt move on,safe mode
loads for a bit then stops, does anyone know if this is an OEM issue
(changes etc)?

Have you tried a repair installation?

When changing some major components - you may need to perform a repair
installation.

Thanks but I dont have any discs as this WINXP is preinstalled on the
hard drive.I have made a further mistake since my 1st posting. In the
Bios (with the new cpu and adapter in place) I changed the setting for
"hardware setup configuration" from off to on and rebooted.Still didnt
boot so I took out the cpu and adapter and rebooted with the original
one.Now it only goes to the Bios if I press F1 and then freezes or if I
let it boot it goes to the boot options screen and freezes, sometiomes I
can get it to select "normal boot "or "last config that worked" but it
then freezes either way.
Should I clear theCMOS?

If the PC socket adapter is the only change you've made, then you've not
made a substantial change to the PC either in terms of "XP activation
scoring" nor in terms of hardware that should require substantially
different drivers. That doesn't mean its impossible that the problem is
here, just that it isn't the first place I'd look, perhaps.

So... I'd wonder if your motherboard supports the adapter. Could you
possible need to flash an update onto the BIOS for the faster processor
speed to work?

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

Hello Rob,Thank you for the information about changes,I guess I can
rule that out now.The bios is something else,I contacted Esupport and
their advice was very confusing.I looked on their site for my pc model
HP7915 and then emailed bios agent. Their response was there is no
update available. However if I search the motherboard listings for my
motherboard (by number and manufacturer)on their site there is an
update. The advice I was given by the vendor of the socket adapter is
not to upgrade as this adapter is designed to work with the existing
bios in place and it does correctly register the type, speed and FSB
frequency.
There is however one issue that bothers me I am not sure if this
adapter supports AGTL or AGTL+ Bus and I dont know which AGTL Bus I
have on this board, the chipset I think is an Intel 810.Do you think
this lack of compatability might be the cause of the initial
lockup?(apart from the hardware setup change I have since made in the
Bios-but thats another issue)

Yes, I would perform this "repair installation/reinstallation" if I had
discs. My xp is installed on the hard drive that is inaccessable,I can
only get it to boot to the startup screen, then it freezes.Interesting
anyway that this type of hardware upgrade might involve a
reinstallation/repair I had not considered that.Thanks.

check to see if any other CDs or floppies boot the system. this will
rule out BIOS/CPU conflicts.

Download a small ISO of some linux, BSD, or even a DOS bootdisk. Don't
install, just boot.

If the new boot successfully completes, we know it's not a hardware
issue. Now we start with the concept that it must be windows that is
causing the problem.

Good Luck.. a few of the CD image ISOs that are fairly small to boot
and try are:
Damn Small Linux: ~50MB
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/dsl-2.4-syslinux.iso
FreeBSD Bootonly: ~25MB
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/6.1/6.1-RELEASE-i386-bootonly.iso
Windows-created bootdisk (95, 98, Me, XP) Right click the A: floppy
and click "system disk"

please report back with what you find.
