Cells won't calculate

For some reason, no cells will calculate unless I "F2, enter".

'Calculate' is always in the status bar at the bottom, no matter how
many times I press F9, ShiftCtrlF9, or set the calculation setting to
automatic.

I have three sheets open, with combined size of around 9 Meg. Could it
be the size that matters...?

do you have many formulas in your sheets. This could be
one reason for not allowing automatic calculation anymore

Not a huge number of formulas, perhaps 400 - most of which are simpl
linking, with the most complex being a if(ISNA(Vlookup),0,vlookup())

I've always had the calculation set to manual, the problem is that a
soon as I press F9, calculate reappears in the status bar. I thought i
might be a circular reference, but I haven't been able to find any.

In the end, I've re-created the workbook from scratch, with exactly th
same format and formulas - this seems to have solved the problem (an
reduced file size from 4.5 meg to 600k), so it was probably excel no
liking the size of the file??
