Cell Formatting

Entering a bank sort code into a cell i.e 16-00-04,
however it keeps changing to a date range. I have tried
converting the field to text and then change the format,
doesn't work. I have also tried copying the format from
the cell above and then overtyping it, this doesn't work.
The only way I could get round it was to start the string
with a '. Thanks for the help.
