cell format doesn't take place

I have a formula that subtracts one cell from another. For example:
$10,000 - $4,000 = $6,000. However, in the cell with the answer ($6,000), it
displays as 6000. I tried changing the cell formatting, but no matter what I
do, the "sample" doesn't change. It insists on 6000. If I remove the
formula, and put in $6,000 manually, it will display as $6,000. Am I missing
something?

What is the cell formatting now?

Is there conditional formatting in that cell?

the cell formatting is number, with the 1,000 separator and no conditional
formatting in that cell. I just can't get it to change in Excel 2007

How about formatting the number 6000 to Currency?

Does that work?
