Cell contents not appearing in title bar

When I highlight a cell the contents don't appear in the line at the top so
that I can edit them
 
The cell contents are not supposed to appear in the Title bar. They appear
in the Formula bar. To display the formula bar, click on View | Formula Bar.
 
If your Formula bar is enabled and you see nothing in it when you click on a
cell, there is a good chance the cells are set to "hidden" and the worksheet
is protected.
