CD's won't burn

Ever since installing SP2, my Samsung CD-RW will not burn a CD using
Roxio. When I try I get a message about it being the incorrect media.
I've installed the latest drivers for the CD drive and the latest
patches for Roxio. Interestingly I also have an external Sony
DVD/CD-RW that I can use to burn CDs. I've looked at KB308591 but I
have a different Samsung drive. Any suggestions?

Hi, Brian.

Maybe we should form a club. :>(

I've used my TDK DVD burner many times to burn CDs. This week, though, no
matter whether I tried WMP 10, Roxio 6.x or Nero 6.6, I always got the
message to "put a blank CD in the drive" - but there WAS a blank CD there.
After a few retries the message changed to "the CD drive is in use" - but it
wasn't. :>( This frustration went on for a day or two.

To make a long story short, after a live chat with a tech on TDK's website,
I concluded that the CD laser in the drive had died, although the DVD laser
still works fine. And the drive is just 3 months out of warranty. Luckily,
I haven't yet given away the TDK CDRW that I had replaced with the DVD
burner. I swapped it back in to replace my old DVD-ROM. Now, I can burn
CDs on the CDRW and DVDs on the DVD, but I miss being able to use the DVD
burner as an all-in-one drive. It won't even PLAY a CD now.

I know this doesn't address your problem, but I thought maybe you could use
a little empathy.

A follow-up. I tried burning a CD using the native Windows XP utility
and was successful. This told me that the problem was between Roxio
and the CD-RW. Roxio hasn't answered my call for help yet, but
searching their discussion group did lead me to the answer. I have a
Samsung SW-252S CD-R/RW that came with my Dell. The latest driver,
R902, available on the Dell site does not work with Roxio. But the
latest firmware from Samsung (R954) does. But the installer that
comes with R954 does not work with Dell. I had to download the Dell
firmware update to get the Dell specific installer (sfdnwin
3.06.4.exe) and the firmware from www.samsungodd.com (R954EXP.bin).
Then I used the Dell installer to install the Samsung update.
Confusing? Yes! But it worked!

Congratulations, Brian! And thanks for the report back. It may very well
help some other user with a similar problem. ;<)

In a newsgroup, we all learn from each other.
