CDrom missing from My Computer, Windows Explorer and Device Manager.

My Son's Compaq Laptop using XP, fairly new.

Internal CDrom/DVD/RW drive has disappeared from Windows Explorer,
My Computer and Device Manager. It is shown in the BIOS and is not
disabled. It had been working ok and will play music.

We tried Search for new hardware and it doesn't even see it. His
card reader for his digital camera is also missing.
I have searched the last 1000 posts here but see nothing on this.
Using Google I found cures for similar problems but in those cases
the drive is listed in Device Manager.

Any information would be appreciated.

Did you have a look at the post with the Subject line "DVD

"imran saleem"
reinstall windows

Sounds a little premature. Some trouble-shooting at a BIOS
level and perhaps with a DOS disk might reveal a problem
that is independent from Windows.

I see it, I downloaded 1000 headers and searched for CDrom so it was
missed.
The diagnostics are probably covered up by the OEM logo so I'll have
him try the workaround for that tomorrow.
