CDROM Inserted - System Locks Up

Windows XP Home - locks up, freezes, when I boot up with a CDROM in either
the CD or DVD drive. I have power-down the system to restart. System also
locks when I insert a CD into either device. This problem does not occur in
Safe mode. 1 month old Compaq system with SP2 installed. I tried unistalling
both CD and DVD but it did not fix the problem. The BIOS allows boot from CD
which I also disabled / enabled in an attempt to fix the problem.

What does tech support at HP/Compaq have to say about the problem? As an
aside I would guess that there is a problem with the "AutoPlay" part.
You could try disabling it as part of troubleshooting.

For some XP users, having a CD Rom inserted causes a reboot. Fix, is to
remove it. That said, what is the CD placed and why is it needed upon boot?
If it is the XP CD, check your boot sequence via the BIOS, if not, more info
needed. As for this behavior not being repeated via safe mode, clearly
states that it is a driver issue. Good luck!
