cd writing and non-admin-rights

I did a google-search through the archive to try to locate information
about the issue of running cd-burner software for non-admin-users.
The information that I found seemed to suggest the following:

- It is mainly a software issue, i.e. correctly configured software
would be able to write to the cd-writer.

The options available are:
- Obtain and run system utility that grants admin-rights for specific
programs.

The vendor of my cd-burning software (www.cheetahburner.com) lists the
following as a way to set rights to non-admin users:
-----
it may be necessary to have security rights to use the CD/DVD drives. To
give CD rights to a non-administrative user, do the following:

1) Open 'Control Panel' and click on 'Administrative Tools'.
2) Double click on 'Local Security Policy'.
3) Double click on 'Security Options'.
4) Double click on 'Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on users only'.
5) Click on Enabled.
-----

I have contacted them since this does not work on my system, and am
waiting to hear back from them.

I would just like to know if anyone has any thoughts, knowledge about
this issue, and whether my surmises are correct?

The security option you listed has nothing to do with allowing a regular user to burn
a cd. All it does is prevent a network user from accessing a cdrom on a computer.
There are other workarounds that include modifying the registry. I can not find the
link right now. Someone else will probably post it. --- Steve

Thanks, that makes sense. However now it does seem to be working with
the mentioned settings. I'll try to change it back and see if there is
a difference in functionality.

I do have a log on the registry settings etc that cheetah installed by
running the veritest-analyzer, but I can't locate any settings at first
glance that are related to the cd-drive.

I have now tried to change the setting back and it would appear that the
disabling of non-local users to use the drive actually also enables all
local users to use the drive.
