CD rom Not installed

Hi,
I'm having a problem with CD.I'm using XP home on a Dell dimension 8200.
I have just got myself a Pioneer DVR 100 & cannot get it to work.
In bios it tells me my cd rom is not installed.
Can anyone help me get it back to being installed?

Hi Marty,

If the BIOS doesn't see it, then first suspect that either the cabling is
not fully seated or the jumper on the drive is not set correctly for the
position it is in. If these prove to be ok and it is still not recognized,
then you may have a faulty drive unit.

Thanks for responding Rick.
I have checked the cabling all seem to be working fine. Don't understand the
jumper thing though?
I have tried the drive in another machine & it worked fine so I'm still at a
loss as to what the prob maybe.

Hi Marty,

There is a small jumper on the back of the drive, and it can be placed in
several positions (master/slave/cable select). This position much match the
way your hardware is configured. If you placed it as a secondary drive on
the main IDE controller cable, then it should be in the slave (SL) position.
If your hardware uses cable select (CS) to determine the hardware hierarchy,
the jumper must match that. Check the owner's manual for proper positioning
of the jumper.

I understand now I have tried the jumper on slave as purchesed & on master.
But now I have it back to slave the only one I haven't tried is cable select.
DVD destuctions say it should be on slave my old CDrom was also on slave so
I left it as is.

Rick is trying to tell you how to set jumpers and ribbon cable position for
master/slave configuration.
You say DVD is to be slave.

Set jumper on old cdrom as master (usually diagram on drive)
Set (or leave DVD) jumper as slave (verify on diagram)

Put old cdrom in computer as master by connecting it to the end of the
ribbon cable.
This means that the cdrom should set above the dvd in case.
Put DVD in computer connect to other connector on ribbon cable.

Computer should see CD and DVD in BIOS and in Windows.

If not, drive might be bad.

Hi, I'm not Rick but I hope you won't mind. ;-) Dells actually are
normally set up with cable select, so that's what you want to do. Put
the jumper in the cable select position. When you start the computer,
go into Setup (BIOS) and make sure it is found.
