CD Rom and I/O error

I have a Matishita DVD-CD Ram, When I try to use the drive I get and I/O
error. It works maybe 1 out of 10 tries??
 
Check the ribbon cable on the drive. Make sure both ends are seated
properly, and the cable is not damaged. You may have to replace it.
Possibly a defective drive too.
