CD Missing

My son has an HP system with a DVD and a CD ROM. For some reason the system
quit "seeing" both of these drives most of the time. Sometime, however,
they appear to work, but most of the time they do not. They are both on the
same cable. What would be the most likely reason for this?

Marv, replace the Ribbon IDE cable and make sure the drives are connected
properly. Red stripe on
cable should align with Pin 1 on drive connector and motherboard
connector. Also, take a look at this
to see if it applies.
