CD/DVD to which IDE?

J

Jeff

I have a desktop running XP which has 4 HDs:
2 large HDs, 1 CD burner and 1 DVD reader.
To which IDE Channel is the preferred order to attach these 4 drives?
I believe my CD drive is attached to the wrong IDE channel because it gives
me trouble on bootup and also writing to the CD drive.
Also, is there a way to find out which IDE channel the various drives are
attached to without physically opening the box?
Thanks.

Thank you. I own Nero so I will use it as a diganostic tool.

Actually it is Nero (latest 6.6) that is giving me trouble writing to this
CD drive. It just hangs at "writing" without making any progress. It can
read the CD fine but just cannot write to it. The same CDs are writeable on
my laptop using the same version of Nero, so it is not the CD that are
damaged.

Hope the other link will tell me where to put the CD drive.

Device Manager: select View - Devices by connection.

I ran Nero Info Tool. Here is what I found:

Primary IDE
- Master: a Hard Drive
- Slave: Conner tape drive (forgot about it)
Secondary IDE
- Master: ATAPI CD burner
- Slave: DVD reader drive

All have DMA "on" except for the tape drive which has it off.

I have 2 types of trouble:
a) Nero cannot write to the CD writer, even though it finds it and reads it
fine.
b) When I boot up, half the time the boot takes forever before it finds the
HD, sometimes requiring me to press Enter several times. It is worse when
there is a CD in the CD drive.

How would you suggest I reconnect the CD writer? I installed it long ago
and I think not in the ideal IDE location.

I'd remove the tape drive. They can cause no end of trouble :/

I may do that since I have not used it in ages. I now backup to an external
USB HD.

If I remove the Tape drive, should I change any of the other attachments?

I split my CD drives as onto separate IDE connections for
faster,"On-The-Fly" recording from one Cd to the other.
Note:If you remove the Tape drive make sure you also remove any
related software from the control panel Add Remove Programs list and
the Device Manager if there are any legacy entries for it.This is best
done from,"Safemode".
