CD/DVD Drive not seeing blank discs

When loading a blank disc for burning, Windows Explorer tells me:-
'D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function'
The drive will happily play a video CD or DVD but does not like blank discs.
Does anyone have a cure for this problem?

Double click on My Computer. Right click on the optical drive and select
Properties. In the Burning tab, is the box Enable Burning on this Drive
checked?
