cd drive reads audio but not data cds

hi! my cdrw/r drive has been working fine until i started
burning cds. it is then i found out that my drive can't
read data cds but surprisingly it can detect my blank and
my music cds. when i insert a data cd, the light comes on
for a moment then it goes off. clicking on d:\ folder
gives me a blank page. i tried the 'Run' function, but
the error msg comes "insert disc into drive". Strangely
enough, inside device manager/CD-ROM drives/properties,
when i click 'populate', it yields a reading of a few
hundred MBs which proves that it senses that a data cd is
inserted. I hope i described the problem clearly. Thanx!

we have that problem with both our dvd reader & seperate writer. audio cds play in media player, but nothing is detected from "my computer". our writer make is a sony Dvd RW DW-U14A and our reader is a simple 16X dvd

recently i did all available updates for XP home and that did nothing - our pc hardware shop did a windows repair, that did nothing to help us but delete all of the updates

our dvd drives work fine on other computers, and i have uninstalled all cd related software on my pc - but still no luck..

I have the exact same problem - on three machines. They
all use nero. All were working fine until I did the
upgrades. Restoring is out of the question. Does
someone have a solution.

Use the device manager to remove the drives and then reboot.
They will be detected and the correct drivers installed.

that worked, but after a few days went back to not reading discs at all.

i am having a replacement PC because no-one at the pc manufacture store could ment this. there are lots of problems on this site, and a lot of them are simular problems to ours.

i wont be updating (windows update) my new pc. all was working fine till the update for cd hi mat...
