cd drive problems?

I am having problems in getting data from a cd. The cd was burned by a
client, and they confirm that files are there; I put it in my drive and it
says no files! My drive seems to work ok for other cd's and I have tried it
on another machine, same problem. I take it back to their machine & files are
there. I am running XP home edition with SP. Not sure of their setup.

Let me start again!! Is it *just this* CD that is causing a problem - you
said 'My drive seems to work ok for other cd's'? Although it shouln't make
any difference, which burning program was used to create the CD?

I have had problems with other cd's but haven't been able to confirm whether
it's just a problem with the sender not burning it properly. The one in
question definitely is readable on the machine it was created on. Other cd's
work on my drive, both music and data. Don't know the program details.

Hi

If the CD works in one cd drive it should work in others, unless it was
created with a burning program that has known problems.

make sure that the person burning your cd knows to "finalize" the disc. this
will close the cd and allow it to be read on more computers. A cd with an
open session, which is what it sounds like is causing your problem, can only
be read on computers with the burning program that he used, and obviously,
the computer used to burn it.

also....just make sure that he is sending you a cd, and not a dvd. cause
dvd's can't be read in a cd-rom. sometimes its the stupid things that get
the best of us...lol

Thanx, kid, that sounds like it; will make sure they are finaising the disc.
take your point about the DVD, but I have a combined drive, so could read it
if it was a dvd. Thanks anyway

Two aspects:
One is mode of burning. If he is using a packet writing method (eg
Direct CD or InCD) you will need a compatible package on your machine;
or at least the UDF Volume reader
(http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/software_updatesv5.jhtml
and click Software Updates on left, then bottom of page)

Or it may simply be a matter of compatibility of the
burner/media/reader, which is tricky; another type of disk would be
indicated
