My CD drive opens and closes by itself. Autorun is sometimes displayed. I
shut off and restart but it continues. Help!!!!! How do I stop it?

Start your computer in Safe Mode (press F8 before Windows XP boot screen appears and select 'Safe Mode' in the menu). Then run some antivirus and antispyware software:

Microsoft Antivirus Partners
http://www.microsoft.com/security/partners/antivirus.asp

Windows Defender (Beta 2)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en (validation required)

Ad-Aware Antispyware
http://www.lavasoft.de/ms/index.htm

Spybot-S&D Antispyware
http://www.safer-networking.org/microsoft.en.html

Open my computer. Right click the icon for the cd while it is in the drive.
Go to properties and on one of the tabs you can chose to stop autorun and
autoeject.

You have a virus. You need to make sure that you have both a reputable,
up-to-date antivirus program and a firewall (other than Windows firewall)
installed.

Well, we don't really know if Barb has a virus or not. It is true that
some very old trojans (Back Orifice & SubSeven) could be used to
remotely control the infected PC's CD drive, but if Barb has a current
version av installed, even if she let her subscription lapse and the
definitions were old it would have caught those trojans.

It is much more likely that her drive is failing. I would test by:

1. Scanning with a current version av (not earlier than 2005) using
updated definitions in Safe Mode. That will answer the "am I infected
with a virus?" question.

2. Swapping out the CD drive for a known-working one.

After doing those things, Barb should come back with the results if she
needs more help.

I realize this is a bit late, but it may help someone. You
may be up against an issue I have seen a lot in the Dell
machines like the GX150 -- they have a front panel that
covers the front of the CD drive with a little button that
is spring loaded. It is supposed to push the eject button
on the CD drive when you push the button. What I
often see is the button starts to bind up (the hole it goes
through is a bit small) and continues to push the button
on the CD drive. People think their systems are possessed
or something. I just recently got 7 GX150's from Boeing
surplus (upgrading the machines around the company).
Out of the 7, 5 had that issue with the binding button.
