CD drive disappearing act

What would cause my CD-ROM drive to disappear from windows explorer? I
rarely use it, but when I do, there it's not, right under 'Devices with
Removeable Storage". The A:\ shows but the D:\ doesn't, unless I reboot.
Then, there it is. It works and I can play a CD, but a month later, I put in
a disc and the light comes on and I hear it spinning, then the light goes
off and... nothing. I open explorer, and it's gone again! Then I
reboot...you see where this is going.

What might cause this behavior?

Many thanks,

Rip

Marginal hardware or cable connection. If Windows loses or can't see the
hardware connection it won't show up for you. And after a reboot it sees
the drive then there it is.
