cd doesn't boot / not a valid win32 app

i've tossed about 5 DVDs so far.
i downloaded the 32 bit DVD. I md5 checksummed it against a post on a forum
I found and the sum is correct along with the filesize.
i've tried using my nero express and cdburnerxp pro.
i just updated the firmware on my DVD writer to the latest version from
lite-on's website.
all my hard drives and the burner are in DMA mode.
i've been burning at 6x on my 16x burner. 6x is the lowest speed it will
allow me to burn at. yet I STILL cannot get past the initial 'loading windows
files' boot screen and if i try setup from windows xp sp2 it says not a valid
win32 app.
what in the heck is going on here?
thanks,

Are you trying to install Vista x64? If so you would get the invalid win32
app message when installing from an XP x86 desktop. Vista x64 can only be
installed from the XP Pro x64 desktop or by booting with the dvd.

I know you would know the difference, but you must have a 64-bit capable
machine to install Vista x64.

i finally got it to burn.
i was using memorex 16x DVD-R which have worked PERFECTLY
for knoppix, kubuntu, etc.
Anyway, I used another brand of DVD-RW and i was able to partially boot from
the DVD but the
computer froze.
I launched the setup from Windows XP SP2, got past the file copy stage and
upon first reboot
got a BSOD with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or something like that.
i guess it doesn't like my hardware.
anyway, i suppose it was the media.
thanks for your reply.

Burn speed should be the lowest available with your software. MS suggests
1x or 2x. My lowest was 6x and that did work. The BSOD is hard to figure
without the crash file. How much memory do you have? Have you tested it
lately?
