CD burner with cue/toc support, no install?

Between Google and Pricelessware, I find Exact Audio Copy and cdrdao. The
latter can be used with Xduplicator, a gui front end.

I'm also aware of Burn At Once, another cdrdao front end, but it has to be
installed. I don't know how intrusive the install process is, or how
cleanly it uninstalls.

Is anyone aware of any other free CD writing software that supports .cue or
..toc files, and can be used without being installed?

Would someone be so kind to explain why one would be against a program
installing? I don't understand the issue here.

For the most part, people aren't against this, they just prefer to be able to run a program without installing files they already have on their system (e.g. VB, VC runtime and other dependancy files etc).

Also makes for a smaller download package.

To run it straight off removable media on any system?

I have many favorite programs on the D partition, and they continue to
work no matter if windows crashes, and needs to be re-installed, or if I
change to another version of windows.

I try to avoid using programs which have to be re-installed when I
reinstall windows. I use more and more programs which do not depend
much on windows to work.

Many of my favorite no-install programs are programs I have moved to
another partition than it was installed to, and I test if it works well
from there. Then it is fairly independent from windows and I keep it.

On C: I only have Windows and a few programs which do not work
un-installed, so when I have to repair or upgrade windows I have to
re-install those programs too. That is why I try to minimize the number
of programs which need to be installed correctly to work. If I can find a
program which is less fussy and works in all situations, even if I have
moved its program folder to another drive, I prefer that program.

Bingo!

That's my reason, anyway. I've have some recordings from the late 50s,
made by a friend's band. I've put them on CD for the friend, but he needs
to be able to make additional copies in the future. He is not particularly
computer literate, so he may have to depend on others to burn copies for
him.

I don't want him to be at the mercy of bad ripping software, so I want to
provide him with data cds that can be used to generate new audio cds,
containing .cue, .toc and .wav files, as well as the software to use them.
The executable and data files could be used directly from the cd or copied
to the hard drive. Since not everyone will have software that supports
..cue and .toc files, and may not want to install extra software, it may be
important for me to provide software that does the job without
installation.

Older versions of VCDeasy could be used without being installed. They use
CDRDAO for burning.

In addition to what Steven Burn said, some people prefer programs that
don't install under the incorrect assumption that those programs don't
make registry entries or create files in other than the program's folder
and can therefore be removed without leaving detritus simply by deleting
the program folder. As I said, that is incorrect much of the time.

In addition to other reasons already explained...

Install programs can replace vital system files with a wrong or older
version. Once that happens, it can screw up your system and be almost
impossible to fix.

Install programs sometimes ask you to shut down all programs & processes -
a hassle to switch those processes back on. (Whenever I shut down
processes, I can never get my dial-up connection to work, and I have to
reboot - a PITA.)

Hi,

I just want to say that's exactly how I have felt for the past couple of
years, and it has gotten to the point that 90% of the software I rely on
are portable and do not require installation. In fact, I put all the
portable software on an external USB 40GB HDD, and just stick it into
the PC I happen to be working on. Very convenient!

That is why I started portablefree.com recently to promote the idea of
using portable software. Roger, could I quote you on my website?

Regards.

I've been collecting my "1 file wonders" and portable software for over 10
years. Many of my most indispensable programs are 1 file and portable.

Hi,

If you have the time, please send me some of these programs (app name +
website preferred, not actual EXEs), and I will add them to
portablefreeware.com.

Thanks!
