CD burner problem

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until early January, when it refused to burn data
or music discs. This drive is still under Dell warranty but they insist it
is a software problem. I have read everything I can find on the subject and
now it will sometimes burn, sometimes not, and if it does work, I get a
message saying that it didn't!

Sonic Record Now 7.3 was included on this computer, and I was previously
able to burn discs with it and with the Windows XP built-in feature. Now it
behaves the same way with either program, although Record now will not burn
music files.

Any new ideas?

Guessing this to be in the CD drive, but nothing happens.

Since the drive works some of the time, it does sound like a software
problem. I'm not familiar with Sonic's software (have never used it) but
have you considered uninstalling it and trying something different?
Personally, I like Ahead's products (Nero and InCD) for my CD and DVD
burning.

Thanks for trying to help.......

I have uninstalled the Sonic software, and the XP built-in burner still does
not work as it did before. This system worked fine for 8 or 9 months and
then suddenly stopped working correctly. I'm not of a mind to buy a new
software program until I am sure that the drive itself is not malfunctioning
somewhere.

I will probably take it to my local computer guy who has never steered me
wrong, and get him to check it out. I just don't have time to spend any more
hours on the phone with Dell.

Nero has a free trial which is why I recommended it. That and I use it and
like it. But if that's not the way you want to go, that's fine - it's
certainly your choice.

Although the problem sounds more software than hardware, there is still the
chance that it is a hardware problem. I wrestled with a CD writer for a few
months before investing in a new one - no failure to write but sure did a
good job creating a coasters every now and then. Popped a new burner in and
never had a problem after that. In other words, a burner can string you
along like this (burning and then not burning) before dying completely.

Whichever way it turns out, good luck to you and hope it gets fixed in a
satisfactory manner.

Ah, I like that!

Thanks for letting me know. I'll look for it.

Yes, but I will try the Nero program and see what happens. Some of the
things it is doing right now have me back to the hardware issue....

Thanks Sharon.
