Is there freeware that can capture screen and mouse activity into an AVI
file that I can use as a demo -- sort of like CamTasia?

There is Wink. Its output however is in Macromedia Flash, not AVI.

CamStudio 2.0 could be the solution.
But it does not exists as freeware any more,
so using the WayBack maschine, here it is/was as freeware:

I didnt even think of the Wayback machine! Thanks! Now, I have a list of
other packages that have left shareware to see if the Wayback has them too.

The couple of times when I'd tried retrieving a binary from the web.archive
cache, it failed (w redirect to an html page). Leading me to the hypothesis
that they do not store full binary files. However, that link above does
indeed seem to be fully functional. So must be time to revise my earlier
notion. As well, to maybe do the same as you, re-open a few of those hunting
projects that were earlier abandoned...
