Capacitor failure in LCD Monitor

I just opened up a now non-functioning LCD monitor and discovered two out of
seven electrolytic capacitors (Canicon 470 uf/16v) with the same "capacitor
plaque" failure that has been plaguing motherboards. Has this problem shown
up before and with which monitors? Did the monitor manufacturer repair or
replace the monitor or circuit board for you?

old , i see

I guess we live and learn. This was a very expensive Solarism high
brightness monitor that is about one month out warranty and they have
refused to cover any repairs. This surprised me because we lost a
motherboard in one of the workstations last spring due to the same problem.
It was over a year out of warranty and Abit replaced the board.

I think that next time, I'll look for a monitor with a warranty longer than
a year and a supplier who supports his products.

You may not find that.
... and a supplier who supports his products.

What you might find, however, is brands that offer
factory extended warranties or service contracts.
If they are in the 4%-of-purchase-price-per-year
range, they may be a reasonable deal.

Be sure to read the fine print, particularly the part
about substituting a "comparable" replacement.

Or lease.

Are these caps in the CFL circuits? If so, this
problem may go away once the industry switches
to solid-state backlights. On the other hand, if
they are in the power supply, we'll need to stay
vigilent.

This bad electrolytic capacitor problem has been going through the PC
industry for the past couple of years, it seems. There's a website,
www.badcaps.net that discusses the background and lists the manufacturers
with the worst reputations. All in all it's kind of a scary thing when you
think of the number of electrolytics that are sprinkled over a typical
circuit board. I've ordered replacements for all the Canicon capacitors on
the Solarism monitor circuit board. I'll be changeing them in the next week
or so. My concern is what else got broken by the bad caps.
