I have an HP Pavilion Desktop running XP Pro. I have two CD/DVD Read/Write
drives in this PC. I recently noticed while attempting to copy some data to
a CD to give to may son for this PC that I'm no longer able to write to a
CD-R disk using either drive. It's been a long time since I've even tried
this, so I'm not sure when I lost the capability. I do remember that when I
use to insert a blank CD-R, a message would open asking if I wanted to copy
files to the CD. I no longer get that. In addition to XP's built-in
burnning capability, I have both Sonic's Record Now and Nero burning
software, and neither will recognize a blank CD when I put it in eitehr of
the drives. I also can't create audio CDs using Windows Media Player 10. I
can still use the Nero backup routine to back up data to a blank DVD-R+.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Uninstall Nero and Sonic!

Now try using Window's CD writing pakage as it should be now functioning as
a consequence of the crap being removed 'I do remember that when I use to
insert a blank CD-R, a message would open asking if I wanted to copy files to
the CD'.

I have found that Stomp Record Now does not affect the CD / DVD functions in
the same adverse way as Nero or Sonic.
