When I click on the Update Windows link, it won't install the updates. I've
also noticed when I click on any link that opens in a new window, it won't
open. The Update Windows notification referenced RPCRT4.dll. I tried fixing
it by running SFC and extracting the file. Also tried 'repairing' IE6. Still
have the problem. I'm on WIN98SE and IE6.x. Should I reinstall IE6? If so,
how?

Disable your anti-virus when obtaining the updates.
Make sure that your firewall is allowing the connection to Windows Update .
This would be on ports 80 and 443.

Frank:
I've tried all those fixes. My problem is the exact same problem as Brian's
(2nd window not opening, and that is why I'm not able to update Windows) and
I've tried all those fixes too. Is there a patch or something I can
download? I don't want to reformat till I've tried everything else.

I used to have an answer, but I lost it. Sorry.
Maybe someone else will jump in.

Ron,
1. Do you have a Pop-Up blocker program installed. You may need to make changes in the preferences to allow links of the MS web page to be viewed.
2. Have you run a Spyware detection/removal program to check to see if the links to the update page has been blocked. Two (2) good & free programs I recommend are as follows:
a. Ad-Aware:
http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/

b. Spybot: Search & Destroy:

3. Have you altered the HOST file on your PC? It might be that some spyware program has altered the HOST file.

I just reinstalled WIN98SE and IE6. Still no luck.

I have a google popup blocker which I tried disabling. Also ran Spybot and
Adaware.

Ron,
See Google toolbar help pages about adjusting pop-up blocker settings:
