Can't type in Word 2007

Just installed a trial version, opened Word and can't type any single
charachter. It keeps showing message at the bottom 'The modification is not
allowed because the section is locked'. What section? What locked? It's a
brand new document. Excell works fine. Did any body else go thru this?

This would indicate that the trial period has expired so all documents will
be locked for editing. This seems strange if you have just downloaded it.
Did you activate it on line? Did you have a beta version installed prior to
this? Is the calendar (clock) on your computer set to the correct date?

This is a brand new installation. I did not have any prior beta or trial
versions or 2007. The computer clock is exactly right. How come could the
trial period (60 days) expire if trial Office 2007 became available only
past week? Besides, it's not that I can't edit an existing document with the
date over 60 days. I open a brand new doc and can't type any single
character. The message at the bottom about locked section rather than expired
trial period. If the latter were true I would not probably have been able to
open Word at all. Besides, I can edit Excel file no problem.

Any suggestions?

Not so. When the Office trial has expired, you can still open and read
documents, but you cannot edit, print, create new or do anything else. The
message 'LOCKED' is appropriate.

Are you sure you have activated the product? Did you install over a previous
version of Office? Has Tools, Protect been used on the previous version?

What happens if you start in Safe Mode. From Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Can you edit now?

Hi Yuri,

There are a couple of scenarios that can cause this. One of the most common is a corrupted activation file, another is the software
not 'passing' one of the MS Genuine Advantage checks for Windows or Office (and those aren't always correct <g>).

With all of the Office apps close and in a profile that has administrator privileges, use Start=>Run to search for the file
opa12.dat and rename it to opa12.old, then restart the PC and open Word to see if you can activate Office 2007.

==================
1. I did not install over previous version. I still have Office 2003.
2. I think 2007 was activated. This was the last step of installation as far
as i remember. Besides, I can create and edit Excel files. So it means both
activation and expiration topics are irrelevant. Anway, how can I check if it
was activated or not?
3. The trial Office 2007 just became available only past week and you have
60 days expiration it could not expire. Even if it did expire and even I were
still able to open Word there should've been a popup message saying the trial
version has expired and I can only see files as read-only. This is user
interface design 101. When I cancel this message and tried to type something
in, then the 'Locked' message at the bottom is appropriate. But nothing says
the trial version is expired because it's not.
4. I never used Tools, Protect in previous version. >>

Thank you, Bob. I will try but I don't think this is the case. Should it have
been, I would've not been able to edit an Ecel file either, but I can.
Activation activates all Office programs. But I will let you know.

im having the same problem, new download and it keeps coming up that 'this
modification is locked', whats up?

Search for the file opa12.dat and rename it to opa12.old, then restart the
PC and open Word. This would 'trick' Word to think that it has not been
activated yet and will force you to do it. It should help. Let me know.
